First opened in 1948, the airport is located about 9 km or 5 miles northwest of Berlin Alexanderplatz, and approximately 7 km north of Bahnhof Zoo Station (Zoologischer Garten). Motorists can reach the terminal using the highway / road A1111/E26, exit “Saatwinkler Damm”.

Public transport: bus X9, 109, 128 and TXL. The nearest underground stops are S + U-7 Jakob-Kaiser Platz (for the buses X9 and 109), U-6 Kurt Schumacher Platz ( bus number 128) and the tram stop Beusselstraße ( express bus TXL ).

A connection to the underground network was planned, but in view of the airports closure in 2011, plans have been scrapped.

History
Just two months after the start of the Berlin blockade in 1948 the airport had the longest runway in Europe, with a total length of 2400m. At that time the longest runway in Europe. On 05.11.1948 the first aircraft could land. Tegel was only officially opened about a month later, in December 1948. Civil aviation started on 01/02/1960.

During the cold war, flights in West Berlin could only be operated by the three occupying powers, U.S, Britain and France. Similarly, the crew of the airlines were citizens of these countries. The first airline to provide civilian flights from Tegel was Air France.

The terminal building is located north of the runway (Tegel Nord) and was first used by the French forces as a military airport. From 1974, the facilities for civilian air traffic were closed, as the hexagonal terminal building (Terminal A), which is still in use today, was opened.

The airport facilities Tegel-Süd were officially inaugurated on 10.23.1974, and first used on 11/01/1974. After some delay, in the summer of 1975, civilian aviation moved entirely from Tempelhof to Tegel airport. Pan American and British Airways also flew to Tegel.

Since 1988, Tegel airport, also known as Otto Lilienthal, has been the busiest airport in Berlin and also the most popular (the number of passengers exceeded official available capacity in recent years). With German reunification on 3 October 1990, Berlin-Tegel International was also a Lufthansa destination, which had until then not been permitted to fly to the airport.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, a new airport was planned in Berlin-Brandenburg, which is why Tegel will no longer be expanded. With the commissioning of Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI), operations at Tegel airport will cease in 2011.
