Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, is home to attractions like the Pink Palace, the Shankaria Bazaar and Dhakeshwari Temple. It's also nicknamed the World's Rickshaw Capital.
Ideal time to travel to Dhaka
Dhaka has a humid, tropical climate with the Monsoon rains starting in May and lasting until September. Tropical storms can also sweep over the country from April to June. September to March is ideal for travel to catch the best weather.
Things to see and do
Chobi Mela, a photography festival, occurs at the end of January, and in February the Dhaka Art Summit and Dhaka World Music festivals are hosted. Islamic festivals, Eid el Fitr and Adha, and the Hindu festival, Kali Puja are all observed. Dates are determined by the lunar calendar and therefore vary from year to year.
Preparatory Dhaka travel advice
British passport holders need visas for Bangladesh. 1-month visas can be applied for at the Bangladesh High commission. Passports must be valid throughout the duration of your stay. Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid inoculations should be up to date. Cholera, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies are also recommended. The risk of malaria is low here.
Bengali is the main language and Urdu and Hindi are also spoken in certain areas. Some people speak English.
Living costs in Dhaka are low, with restaurants charging around Tk 60 for meals. Upmarket restaurants are located in Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara.
Dhaka transport and hotels
Airport departure tax costs around BDT300, although ticket prices usually cover this. Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is situated 20 km north of Dhaka. The Public Airport Bus provides services to Gulistan bus station from Airport Road, which is situated about 5 minutes from the airport terminal. Fares cost around BDT 10 and buses run until 8pm and are sometimes very full. Avoid taking the buses if carrying bulky luggage. Taxis to the city cost around BDT 400 and take approximately 30 minutes. If using unmetered taxis, agree on a price beforehand. Cheap hotel beds cost around Tk 60 and mid-priced accommodation costs about Tk 4,100. Visitors can use cycle rickshaws for short distances. 15-minute journeys cost around Tk 30 to 50, but do negotiate fares in advance. Metered auto rickshaws (CNG's) cost around Tk 150-250 per 8 km and Tk 25 for the first 2 km. Tk 7 is added per km. Metered taxi fares start from Tk 25. The yellow taxis have air conditioning. Buses are much slower than CNGs. Tickets can be purchased before travel at some bus stops.
