      Temples and markets of Kathmandu

      The capital city of Kathmandu in Nepal is an exciting place to visit. It's a popular tourist destination with travellers from around the world. There are many fascinating temples, museums, street markets to see and festivals to enjoy.

      Dry season in Kathmandu

      The best time to travel is between October to April (dry season). The monsoon season is from June to October when there's a likelihood of flooding and landslides. Kathmandu celebrates many holidays and festivals like the March Holi, colour and water fights in March and April, Ghode Jatra, a festival with horse parades held in April. The Nepalese New Year in August, the Gai Jatra, Festival of Cows, September, Indra Jatra, an eight day festival in honour of Indra with dances and processions and in October Dashain, a two week long Hindu Festival. Don't miss the November Jazzmandu, the international jazz festival.

      Nepalese entry requirements

      Before travelling a visa is needed, apply at the Nepalese Embassy in London, passports must also be valid for at least six months. Regarding vaccinations, check with your GP at least eight weeks before the date of your flight. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Diphtheria, Typhus and Tetanus. The export of protected species is strictly prohibited and travellers should avoid hiking alone and take overland bus tours in official tourist buses only. Avoid drinking the tap water, drink only boiled or bottled water and use this for brushing teeth.

      Restaurant meals are around 200-400 NPR, 45 NPR for non-alcoholic drinks and beer around 320 NPR. Typical food is Dal Bhat, rice and lentils with vegetables, a popular street food momos is Tibetan dumplings.

      Kathmandu hotels and travelling around

      Airport transfers are sometimes organised by hotels. Otherwise, taxi transport from the airport to the city centre is around 800 NPR, fixed charge paid in advance "prepaid taxi". This will cost 500 NPR for a normal taxi. The journey takes around 25 minutes to central Kathmandu. Buses are often full and not regular, cost about 10 NPR, taking around 30 minutes for the trip.

      Accoomodation in Kathmandu is plentiful and cheap. Backpacker hostels cost roughly 365 NPR and guest houses are from about 850 NPR per person for one night. Three star hotels approximately 1200 NPR per person and holiday apartments about 2100 NPR per night. Microbus (Tempos) and buses. Tempo fares about 15 NPR, buses about 15-20 NPR. When taking a rickshaw negotiate before boarding, 60-100 NPR. Taxis cost from 200 NPR for 3 km and then 60 NPR/km. Roads are usually busy so walking is often quicker. There are frequent power cuts, so do bear this in mind before travelling to Kathmandu.
