A cultural hodgepodge with undeniable charm

Best described as being a mishmash of cultures, Manila is a unique blend of Malay, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, American and Portuguese influences. This unique fuse also reflects deliciously with Manila's local cuisine.

      Best of Manila

Manila has a warm and tropical climate twelve months of the year, with typhoons occurring from June till October, during the rainy season. Visit Manila from November till April for the best weather. The major holidays in the Philippines are Easter and Christmas, and on January 9 Filipinos celebrate the Feast of the Black Nazarine (Christo Negro). A variety of festivals in celebration of various patron saints also occur throughout the islands.

      Information to consider before departing

British citizens can enter Manila without a visa for less than 30 days, and passports should be valid for 6 months minimum upon entry. Vaccines recommended are cholera, hepatitis A, tetanus, rabies, typhoid and diphtheria, as these are all risks in Manila. Carry photo ID around with you and take note that the weather can be extreme with flash floods and landslides occurring during the rainy season. Visitors should avoid drinking or using tap water to brush teeth, and make sure they peel vegetables and fruits before eating them to prevent stomach infections.

The cost of living in Manila is much lower in comparison with the UK and you should be able to dine at restaurants for around half the price.

Philippine Time (PHT) is 8 hours ahead of UTC/GMT during the winter season. As there is no daylight saving time, the country is 7 hours ahead in the summer.

Travelling to and around the city and accommodation rates

You can use the bus shuttle service between 5 am to 10 pm from terminal 3 to the Baclaran LRT station (Line 1). Scheduled bus services travel between terminals 1 and 2 to the city centre. Taxis and jeepneys (minibuses) also provide services from the airport to the city centre.

If on a tight budget, you can rent basic hostel accommodation for a mere 500 Philippine pesos. Luxury hotels are cheaper than those in the West, so you'll still save considerable amounts of cash to spend on other things.

Jeepneys, buses and the metro are all cheap forms of public transport. In fact, tickets cost around 22 pesos, which is about 30p. When using cabs you can haggle on the price, but do this before starting your journey.
