Visas, vaccines and basic facts

British passport holders need visas and six months validity on passports. Visit your general practitioner well before leaving (at least two months before the trip), to check on accinations such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Polio which are advisable. A Hepatitis B vaccine is also recommended for some travellers. Also, note that Islamabad is quiet, for a livelier feel head to Rawalpindi, for history and archaeology take a trip to Gandharan city of Taxila. Although Islamabad is much cheaper than London, the city and neighbouring areas are more expensive than Pakistan in general. A meal here costs around 200 Rs in a down to earth restaurant. A business lunch will set you back about 500 Rs.

Buses do not run between airport and central Islamabad, so best use the shared suzuki cars instead. Taxis are around 400 Rs. Hailing a taxi outside the airport sometimes works out cheaper. For departures, arrive at least two hours before scheduled departure of your flight, as this is a very busy, slow airport. Guesthouses/cheap hotels are around 1000 Rs, standard is around PKR 2200/night. For getting around, the minibuses are fast and cheap, and if using black and white taxis, passengers should agree on a price beforehand. A month travelcard is about ₨3,500. Islamabad is a grid system city, very green, peaceful, and is an important financial and business destination.
