Ahmedabad: Where Ancient and Modern Meet
Located on the banks of the Sabarmati river, Ahmedabad, the largest city in India's Gujarat province, and the sixth-largest in the whole country, has emerged in recent years as an important industrial and economic hub. It is a large producer of cotton, and is a fastt growing city. Ahmedabad is home to several places of historical and cultural interest including the Swaminarayan Temple, the Bhadra Fort and the Gandhi Ashram, the former house of political leader and icon of peace, Mahatma Gandhi. It is from here that he began his famous Dandi Salt March.
When to visit Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad is at its best during the winter. Temperatures during this time range from a low of 5°C up to 20°C. The summer months from mid-March to mid-June can be overbearingly hot at times, reaching an average high of 45°C. Monsoons begin in mid-June and during this time you can purchase special monsoon season food, such as kichu, from street vendors. There are various Hindu and Muslim festivals celebrated in Ahmedabad including Makar Sankranti and Uttarayan, a kite flying festival, in January; Rakshabandhan and Janmastami in August as well as Muharram and Ramadan on changing dates.
Before your arrival in Ahmedabad
UK passport holders require a visa to enter India. This can be obtained at the consulate, or it's possible in some cases to apply online for an e-Tourist visa. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, polio, tetanus, cholera, typhoid and diphtheria. The local language is Gujarat, but also English and Hindi are widely spoken, especially by those in the tourist sector. Eating out cheaply is pretty easy in Ahmedabad. A cheap thali will set you back around 100 rupees, a meal in a restaurant around 250 rupees and a beer costs about 100 rupees.
Arriving, staying and getting around
A taxi from the airport is about 300-400 rupees, or an auto rickshaw trip around 150-200. Always negotiate the fare in advance. AMTS operates buses from the airport.
There's accommodation for all budgets in Ahmedabad. A cheap hostel costs around 700 rupees (east of Sabarmati in the old town is best for this), a mid-range hotel around 1700 rupees and a luxury hotel in the range of 3400.
Local bus services in Ahmedabad are operated by AMTs and BRTS and cost about 45 rupees for a day pass. Note that there are no buses between 11 pm and 6 am.
