The island of Singapore is one of the world's most popular tourist and business destinations. One of Asia's biggest attractions, Singapore is a vibrant city combining the old with the new. Singapore has an all year round temperature of between 23 degrees and 34 degrees. The climate doesn't fluctuate very much so whatever time you wish to travel, you can enjoy fine weather. Singapore has several holidays and festivals. The Chinese New Year takes place during the new moon at the end of January to early February. Vesakh is a Buddhist Festival, full moon in May and the island's national holiday is on August 9th.
Singapore travel preparations
British passport holders do not usually require a visa for stays of 30 days or less. Passports however should be valid for at least six months from arriving in Singapore. Before you travel, make sure your routine inoculations are up to date like Hepatitis A and typhoid. Drinking and eating is not allowed on public transport, it is subject to high fines. Spitting in the street is also illegal while smoking is only allowed in certain places. Remember to cover your legs and arms as well as take shoes off when visiting mosques. Food is very cheap costing approximately 6 SGD in markets.
Local Singaporean information
Take the metro from Singapore International Airport into the city centre for roughly 2 SGD. The journey takes only about 30 minutes. There's also a bus which takes around 60 minutes, while taxis cost approximately 30 SGD during the day and at night 50% more. Singapore hotel accommodation will cost you around 30 SGD. Check out recommended accommodation areas like Little India, Chinatown, Geylang or in and around Arab Street. Public transport in Singapore is also quite cheap. For the transport system, the EZ link Singapore Tourist Pass is are a good idea. These are rechargeable chip cards for cheap fares on the metro and buses. Taxi prices are higher especially at night and during the rush hour. Travelling around by public transport is ideal to see the island's many attractions like Singapore Zoo, the Botanic Gardens, Underwater World, Peranakan Museum or the Sri Mariamman Temple.
