Lagos is the largest city on the African continent and a major hub in Nigeria. From beaches to museums, markets and shopping centres, it offers visitors to this corner of West Africa a myriad of things to see and do during their stay.
Seasons and events in Lagos
The climate in Lagos presents two rainy seasons, April to June and October to November, as well as a dry season from December to March. The latter is when the Harmattan winds, dusty and powerful, are prominent. Various cultural events are organised in the Nigerian city, including the Eyo festival - a Yoruba celebration, and the Lagos Black Heritage Festival held in May and showcasing local dance and culture. In terms of religious celebrations, both Christian and Muslim holidays are observed in the country.
Important information for Lagos visitors
British citizens need a visa to visit Lagos and their passport must be valid for at least 6 months. The risk of malaria is high and preventive measures must be taken. Otherwise, vaccinations needed are diphtheria, hepatitis A, poliomyelitis, tetanus, typhoid and yellow fever. In some cases, cholera, hepatitis B, meningitis and rabies vaccines are also recommended. The official language in the country is English and the local language is Yoruba. The cost of living is low, with cheap meals starting around 600 NGN. Visitors can discover local street food at Bukkas, but also international cuisine. Markets are interesting, including Balogun and Jankara for crafts, and Lekki for antiques.
Transportation and accommodation
After arriving at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, travellers can take a yellow taxi, which takes around 25 minutes and costs about 6,000 NGN into town. They can also hire a car. When it comes to finding lodgings, mid-range hotel rooms are available for approximately 10,000 NGN per night per person. The most convenient way to travel around Lagos is to take a taxi. The fares are around 400 NGN, but the price should be negotiated before boarding. Otherwise, buses are available, with tickets on BRT lines costing ca. 70 NGN, and on yellow buses around 20 NGN. If you want to avoid being stuck in traffic, you can also take a ferry, with rides at about 50 NGN. Another option is to take a motorbike taxi, called Okada, after asking locals about the price. Finally hiring a car and a driver is also possible, with rates starting around 1,000-2,000 NGN per hour (to be negotiated).
