Choosing the best time to head to Accra

The best time to experience Accra in comfort is by avoiding the wet seasons. These occur twice a year between April and June and also in October. During these months the humidity is high and rain abundant. November to April are therefore the best months to travel to Accra. In December the Panafest is held in remembrance of the slave trade. The Homowo Festival occurs in August/September and is a testament to the resilience of the people of Ghana. It is held to remember the time of the drought and famine which led to a mass migration of people. There are parades and celebrations for a good harvest.

Requirements and advice before you travel to Accra

A trip to Ghana can be exciting but it's necessary to plan ahead as some requirements need to be completed before your trip. Injections are required for Yellow Fever, Cholera, Hepatitis A & B, Meningitis and Typhus. This is in addition to the normal vaccinations and Malaria prevention medication. If you plan to stay for an extended period of time, a rabies vaccine is also recommended. Visit your GP 6 weeks before you intend to leave for your holiday. Besides the vaccinations, when in Ghana it is prudent to sleep under a mosquito net and use an insect repellent daily. Drink only bottled water and don't eat fruit and vegetables unless they are peeled or cooked.

The official language is English although you may hear Ga, the local language.

Eating out is much cheaper than in the UK, one can purchase a simple meal for about 5 GHC and a beer for close to 2GHC.

Accommodation and transport in Accra

From the airport take a taxi from the official taxi rank, negotiate the price beforehand with the driver. The best way to see the city is by hiring a car and driver who'll also act as a tour guide. A trotro is a minibus and is the cheapest form of transport but these are normally crowded. The accommodation can range from about 19GHC for basic rooms to around 3,800GHC for a luxury hotel.
