When to go to Johannesburg
Johannesburg is a year round destination with mostly agreeable weather for travellers. Temperatures are hotter in summers but cooler in winter. 27th of April commemorates Freedom Day. Basic South Africa facts
Passports must be valid for at least 30 days after leaving South Africa. Passports must also have two blank pages at the time of entry and exit. British passport holders do not require visas for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Before travelling to Johannesburg, check with your GP if vaccines are required. Tourists should take precautions due to high crime levels. Avoid using minibus taxis, these are deemed too dangerous for tourists. In case of robbery or assault, travellers are advised to comply with attackers and refrain from self-defence.
The cost of living expenses is much lower than for London and the UK. Restaurant prices are about half the cost of London prices. SAST (UTC or GMT+2) is one hour ahead of UK time in the summer and 2+ during the winter.
Johannesburg airport transfers and hotel information
The "Gautrain" provides quick and easy access from the airport to the city centre. Single ticket prices are about 125 ZAR + 12 ZAR for the Gautrain Card. Journeys take approximately 30 minutes. Taxi prices to Johannesburg cost about 400 ZAR. A night stay at a guesthouse or hostel starts at around 300 ZAR. 3-star hotel accommodation starts at about 700 ZAR per night per person. Getting around on public transport for Johannesburg either use minibus taxis (not recommended) or buses (metrobus). Purchasing single tickets for the metrobus start are approximately 10 ZAR. Buses can be flagged down on main roads, as there is a lack of designated bus stops. Taxi prices are around 10 ZAR per km. Taxis are rare in Johannesburg.
