Lagos travel tips
Buzzing capital Lagos
Modern buildings jostle with restaurants serving traditional cookery in the vibrant metropolis of Lagos. Situated right beside the coast, this city is a great place to go for every type of traveller. Whether you want to chill out beside the water or party all night, check out the National Museum or sample some classic Yoruba dishes, this is the city for you.
Catch a festival but watch the rain
There are two rainy seasons in the Lagos area. These run from April to June and from October to November. The dry season from December to March can be very windy and the winds can bring in dust to the city. There are festivals and other events going on all year round, such as the Lagos Black Heritage Festival in May and all the major festivals of both the Christian and the Muslim calendars.
Things to sort out before you travel to Lagos
If you are a British national, you will need a visa in order to travel to Lagos. You will also need to have at least 6 months' validity remaining on your passport. There is a prevalence of malaria in this region, so make sure you consult a GP at least 5 weeks before you depart for Lagos. You will also need to ensure that you are vaccinated (or that your vaccinations are up to date) for the following conditions: Diphtheria; Hepatitis A; Poliomyelitis; Tetanus; Typhoid; and Yellow Fever. Additional vaccinations (for instance for rabies) may also be necessary depending on the nature of your trip so make sure you ask your doctor about these as well. In terms of how much money to take, the cost of living in this city can be judged by the price of a basic meal in a restaurant which is usually around 600 N.
Tips on getting around in Lagos
You will most likely arrive at Murtala Mohammed International Airport which is situated 20 miles from the centre of Lagos. There are yellow taxis ranked outside the airport and the 45 minute journey to the city will cost around 6000 NGN. Taxis are also the best way to get around the city once you are there; just make sure to negotiate the price with your driver before departure.
