Lagos in Nigeria
One of the biggest conurbations in Africa, Lagos is well known for its port and for its lively music scene which is home to Nigerian hip hop and afrobeat. Lagos is also a major financial centre in Africa, so it attracts many different kinds of traveller, and is a lively city with lots to do.
The best of Lagos
Lagos has two rainy seasons, April to June and October to November. The dry season December-March has the Harmattan winds, which make it dusty and very windy, so try travelling in July or September. The Eyo festival (a Yoruba festival) is held on different dates every year. In May visitors can witness the Lagos Black Heritage Festival of dance and culture. Christmas day and Easter Sunday, the Christian holidays ans the Muslim festivals of Eid Al Fitri, Eid Al Maulud and Eid Al Kabir are all public holidays in Nigeria.

British nationals require a visa and all passports must be valid for 6 months at least. There's a high malaria risk in Nigeria, so consult your GP about 6 weeks before travel. Vaccines to have are Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Poliomyelitis, Tetanus, Typhoid, Yellow Fever. Also recommended are: Cholera, Hepatitis B, Meningitis, Rabies. The official language is English, while the local language is Yoruba. The cost of living is lower here than in the UK and a basic meal is around 600N.

Lagos airport (Murtala Mohammed International Airport) is 20 miles from Lagos centre. Yellow taxis take 45 minutes or so and cost about 6000 NGN. Alternatively, cars can be hired at the airport. Accommodation wise, a mid-price hotel will be about 10,000 NGN per person per night. Getting around Lagos by public transport or taxi? A taxi is a far easier, faster way to get around. Negotiate before you get in the car, fares generally start from N400. There are buses operated by two companies: the company BRT has separate lanes and tickets range from about NGN70 upwards. The yellow buses cost from NGN20. As Lagos is built upon a series of islands, with two distinct areas, there are also ferries in operation, which are good for avoiding traffic jams, fares being about N50. Also try 'Okada' which are motorbike taxis (ask a local about fares). Hire a car with driver for approx. ₦1,000-2,000 per hour. You will need to haggle. Note that roads are often congested. Lagos has a wide international cuisine, but also try 'Bukkas', which sell street food. Balogun market and Jankara markets sell crafts. Lekki Market is good for antiques.
