Valencia - A lovely city on the Mediterranean
Valencia is a lovely city and a destination you just can't help fall in love with. Lovely old town, the amazing central market and the breath-taking sandy beaches are reasons why many travellers visit this wonderful town.
When to visit Valencia
The best time to visit Valencia is between February and November. The Mediterranean climate makes it a wonderful beach destination in late spring, summer and early autumn. Valencia is also a great choice for a city trip during the winter months.
To see Valencia in its liveliest edition, you should visit for the Fallas festival between 15th and 19th March. On the last day, large paper sculptures are burnt, and there are also fireworks. In June and October, there are two film festivals, and 9th October is the Día de Sant Dionís; a local Valencia festival.
What you should know before travelling to Valencia
You should definitely visit the two most important markets in the city: the Mercado Central and the Mercado de Colón (Art deco market halls). Try out the famous Paella Valenciana, the Horchata de Chufa drink and Fartons (cake made with yeast). Valencia is generally cheaper than the UK, especially London. The Menu del Dia usually consists of 3 courses and a drink, and costs about 10 EUR.
Local information you need for your trip to Valencia
You can take the metro lines 3 or 5 from the airport to the city for about 4 EUR + about 1 EUR for the rechargeable card. It takes around 20 minutes and leaves every 10 minutes. You can also take the Aero-Bus for about 2.50 EUR, Fernanbus 150 for about 1.50 EUR (40 minutes), or a taxi for about 15 EUR (15-20 minutes). When travelling around the city, you can use the metro and buses. Children under 10 travel for free, while a single adult ticket costs from around 1.50 EUR. 10 bus journeys ticket costs around 8 EUR and a 10 journeys metro card about 9 EUR. Joint bus and metro card costs around 9 EUR for 10 journeys. Valencia Tourist Card is available from 15 EUR. For taxis, the basic tariff is about 4 EUR + around 1 EUR per km. The city centre is small enough to explore by bike and the rent prices start at around 10-15 EUR per day. Hostel prices start at around 10 EUR in dorms, while 3-star hotels cost from around 50 EUR/night. Camping is available south of the city; tents cost from around 8.50 EUR, bungalows around 70 EUR.
