Kochi is a major city for visitors touring the Kerala area and it is cosmopolitan, lively and bustling. There is a diverse number of things to see such as the iconic Chinese fishing nets suspended high in the air at Fort Kochi, and the beautiful Mattancherry Palace. A folklore museum, temples and ancient churches are all worth a visit in this glorious multicultural place.
Deciding when to go to Kochi
The peak time of year for visitors is August to February when cooler breezes blow and the rainfall is light. Temperatures stay at 30 to 35 degrees. The monsoon season lasts from May to September and March and April can be very humid. Multi-faith festivals and holidays are celebrated throughout the year including Holi Diwali, Christmas, Eid Ul Fitr, Easter and Milad-e-sherif. For 10 days around mid-August the Onam Harvest Festival takes place and is an elaborate giving of thanks.
Facts about travelling to Kochi
Vaccinations including Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus are strongly recommended and, during monsoon season, Cholera should also be considered. Hepatitis B, Rabies and Japanese Encephalitis inoculations might also be needed by some travellers. Drinking water should always come from sealed bottles and fruit should be freshly peeled before consumption. Be careful eating uncooked food of any sort. Visas are needed to enter at Kochi airport and a tourist visa is usually obtainable on landing. It is advised to check the requirements before travelling. The cost of living in Kochi is higher than most of India, but much lower than the UK. A meal out is about 50 rupees and an average hotel room is 2000 rupees a night.
Getting around Kochi by public transport
Travelling from the airport to the centre of Kochi takes about an hour and 40 minutes by bus. The air-conditioned buses are operated by KSRTC and the fare is roughly 80 rupees. There are taxis available which cost approximately 1200 rupees.
To get to Fort Kochi from mainland Kochi there is a ferry which costs around 4 rupees each way. It is possible to hire bicycles in the Fort Kochi area. City buses cost roughly 4 rupees for the first km travelled, and taxis are 50 rupees for the first 3km. Rickshaws are available which are 10 rupees for the first 1km, and scooters can be hired for around 300 rupees a day.
