A fascinating city on the spice route

Kozhikode, or Calicut, was the ancient capital of Malabar before British rule in India, and has a long history as a spice trading centre. Vasco da Gama was the first European to land on the beaches of Calicut in the late 15th century. The English word for calico, a tough cotton textile, has its origins in the name of the city - Calicut.

When is the best time to travel to Kozhikode

Like all of India, Kozhikode is hot throughout the year, with milder weather running from December to March. Generally the climate is humid, and particularly hot from March to May, with the monsoon months being June to September and October to November. The major Hindu festivals are celebrated in Kozhikode, including Diwali in October. Other festivals are Shivarathri Utsavam, held in the Mahaganapathy Temple in October, and Malabar Mahotsavam, celebrated with music, dance and drama over five days in January.
