Best time to enjoy Kolkata
Summer, from March to June can be very hot and humid so many people prefer September to January. The Monsoon season is from May to September and winter temperatures can drop to around 12 C from December to January. The Kolkata Boi Mela (Book Fair) takes place for 12 days from the last Wednesday in January. Bengali New Year (Poila Baisakh) from around April 15th is celebrated with early morning processions. Durga Puja honours the goddess Durga in the first week of October and Kali Puja celebrates the goddess Kali in the first week of November. Those hoping to catch Kolkata International Film festival should visit from 10th to 17th November.
Useful tips before travelling
Visas are required and British citizen passport holders may be eligible for e-Tourist visas. Passports must be valid for a minimum of 180 days and have two blank pages. Many Indian airports charge User Development Fees (UDF). The fee of about Rs 1,000 is normally included in airfares. If not, this will be levied at the airport on arrival. Kolkata is cheaper than the UK; a basic thali is around Rs 130 and a restaurant meal about Rs 350.
Local information for visitors
AC buses go from the airport to the city centre; the VS1 bus goes to Esplanade and the VS2 to Howrah. Fares are about Rs 60. Air-conditioned Volvo buses cost about Rs 50 and run till about 10 pm. A pre-paid taxi to central Kolkata takes about 40 minutes and the fare is about Rs 400. Travellers can also take buses or taxis to nearby Dum Dum metro station to complete the trip for approximately Rs 10. Cheap hostels and budget hotels are available in Sudder Street and near Howrah station. Cheap accommodation is about Rs 700, mid range Rs 1,500 and luxury around Rs 5,000. Taxi and auto fares should be agreed in advance and are approximately Rs 25 for the first 2 km then Rs 18 for each additional km. Smartcards can be used on the metro and prices range from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000 depending on zones. Tourist smartcards offer unlimited zone 1 travel for about Rs 250. Bus prices start at about Rs 6 in vehicles without air conditioning and deluxe buses cost slightly more. Trams cost from about Rs 7 and auto fares are set on fixed routes.
