Goa has a rich history and blends Indian and Portuguese culture in its architecture and customs, temples and churches. The best time to visit Goa is during the cooler Winter months of mid-November to mid-February, when daytime temperatures are around 28°C. The monsoon season begins in June. Important festivals and dates are the Goa Carnival in February and the festival of Ganesha Chaturthi, which lasts for ten days in August and September. Diwali falls in October or November and the Christian festivals of Christmas (in December) and Easter (in March or April) are also celebrated.

The official language spoken in Goa is Konkani, with Hindi and Marathi also being used. During the busy periods of Christmas, New Year, Carnival and Ganesh Chaturthi it is advisable to book transport and hotels well in advance. Prices in Goa are generally lower than in New Delhi, with a cheap Thali, or set meal, costing around Rs 150, while a mid-range restaurant meal costs about Rs 400.

Most people take pre-paid taxis, which have set rates, from the airport to their final destination. The journey to Panjim costs about Rs 700, to Anjuna Rs 1,000, to Agonda Rs 1,500, and to Aramabol Rs 1,400. For other taxis and autos it is important to negotiate prices in advance. Buses are operated by the Kadamba Transport Corp, with a minimum fare of around Rs 3 for a 2 km journey, then Rs 1 for each subsequent kilometre. When travelling around Goa state, bus fares range from Rs 8 to 10, or Rs 10 - 15 for longer journeys, but motorcycle taxis are the cheapest way of travelling. Always negotiate all taxi and auto prices before boarding. Most Goans take a siesta between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., so many shops will shut. In Panaji evening closing time is at around 8:00 p.m. Basic hostel accommodation starts at Rs 700, mid-range hotels are Rs 2,500 and luxury hotels can be up to Rs 4,000 a night.
