Pongal which is a harvest festival that takes 3 days in January is a chance for visitors to get in touch with the Indian culture.

Important information before you travel

When visiting Chennai, a visa is required and it can be accessed from the Indian High Commission website. The passport should have two blank pages with a 180-day period until expiry from the time of entry into India. The cost of living in Chennai is quite low where cheap meals can be sourced for around Rs20. The official language in Chennai is Tamil though English is also spoken widely. It is important to drink bottled water when in Chennai and vegetables should be cooked before consumption. Fruits should be peeled. There is low risk of Malaria, but routine vaccinations are important and others like Hepatitis B should also be considered.

Arriving in Chennai

Transport from the airport to the city is facilitated by suburban trains costing approximately 5 Rupees and going to Chennai park and Egmore. Trains depart at Tirusulam station, located 500m from the airport. Tourists can also utilize prepaid taxis that cost approximately 300 Rupees. Public transport is cheaper than taking taxis. The cheapest fare for public transport is approximately Rs.3, while taxis have a minimum fare of around Rs.100 for an initial 4Km and thereafter cost 12 rupees per Km.

Chennai has many and varied accommodation options where a single room in a hostel or boarding house costs approximately 400 Rupees. Hotels that charge prices in the mid-range cost around 1000 rupees.
