Be prepared!

Before you go to wonderful Cairo, there's a few things you need to remember. You will usually require a visa if you have a British passport, to gain more information you can contact the Egyptian consulate. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the start date of your holiday in Cairo. See your GP or a medical clinic and get the recommended vaccinations for hepatitis A, typhus, tetanus and diphtheria. Whilst it is lovely to bring home souvenirs please do remember that it is forbidden to take home or export antiques, and protected species of plants and animals.

Tap water in the city is not suitable for drinking so make sure that you have plenty of bottled water and you are advised to peel or cook fruits and vegetables before you eat them. The cost of living in Cairo is different to the UK, restaurant and street food is much cheaper with restaurants charging from 20 EGP and street vendors under 10 EGP. Local produce is also cheap, especially from markets. Alcohol, imported food, textiles and electrical goods are all more expensive than the UK. Bartering or haggling at souks (open-air markets) is a must and can get you some good deals.
