Kuala Lumpur travel tips

Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia

The capital of Malaysia - filled with the best of both historic attractions and contemporary culture - has a fairly constant temperature of 28-32 degrees Celsius all year round, meaning you can visit at any time of the year. Remember to take account of the rain though - Kuala Lumpur has two monsoon periods, so visiting between May and August will mean missing the worst of both of them.

When go to Kuala Lumpur

In terms of festivals and celebrations, the Chinese New Year falls on the first full moon of the year between 21 January and 21 February each year. January also sees the Tamil Hindu festival 'Thaipusam', which is a visually stunning 15 km long parade snake from the city centre to Batu caves. The 31st August is Malaysia's Independence Day "Hari Merdeka" and is also a good time to visit, with parades, events and a large firework display taking over the city.

Malaysian entry requirements

British Citizens do not need a visa if they are staying for less than 3 months as a tourist, as long as your passport is valid for 6 months or more from the date of entry. There are no compulsory vaccines but Hepatitis A, Typhus, Tetanus and Diphtheria are all recommended along with the usual routine vaccinations which are needed in the UK.

Prices in Kuala Lumpur are much lower than UK prices. Street food prices start from around 6 MYR. You can expect lunch to cost around 16 MYR and soft drinks about 2 MYR. However alcohol can be relatively expensive for the country, with beer costing roughly 12 MYR and you can expect to pay significantly more western style restaurants as opposed to ones serving local cuisine.

Buses, trains and taxis

A shuttle bus from the airport costs about 10 MYR and takes around 70 minutes to Kuala Lumpur Central station. Taxis will cost from around 80 MYR from the airport to the city centre.

Guesthouse or hostel prices cost around 30 MYR a night, and 3 star hotels from 70 MYR.

Buses, suburban trains and metros start from 2 MYR and taxi prices from around 3 MYR for the first 2 km, then 2 MYR per km thereafter. Expect a surcharge at night between 0-6 o'clock.
