Cairo is the capital of Egypt and is one of the largest cities in Africa. You will see many things here. You will even get a chance to hone your bargaining skills.


When to travel there

May to September can be extremely hot. Most visitors come between November and March when the weather is much more agreeable. The Cairo film festival is held in November. 


Before your holiday

Visas are usually required for British citizens. Contact the Egyptian consulate if you have any questions. Passports need to be valid for at least 6 months after your date of arrival to Cairo. Typhus, diphtheria, hepatitis A and tetanus vaccinations are recommended for your holiday abroad in Egypt. 

The tap water is not potable. You will also need to cook fruits and vegetables or peel them before you eat them. Restaurant prices begin at around 20 EGP and street food can be found below 10 EGP. It is a lot cheaper than in the UK. It is easy to find cheap, locally grown produce in the markets. The price of imported food, alcohol, electrical equipment and textiles is more expensive. Don't buy or collect protected species of animals and plants or even antiques as it is illegal to export them. You will get to use your bartering skills at the local souks. They expect it and will always quote high prices.


Useful information for your holiday

Public transportation in Cairo is well maintained. They have trains, trams, buses, taxis, minibuses, ferries and the underground. Taxi prices are lower than in the UK. The price is 5 EGP for 3 km and 1.5 EGP for each additional km. They try to charge tourists more so be prepared to negotiate for the meter price.

To get to the city from the airport by bus, use number 356 which goes to Tahrir Square. For 2 EGP, the average bus fair, Bus 381 will take passengers to Ramses Station. A taxi to the city centre will cost you approximately 200 EGP. 

There are many options for accommodation in Cairo. A 3 star hotel will be approximately 250 EGP per person, per night. For a smaller budget, a hostel may be the answer. A hostel will charge you about 85 EGP per night.

Cairo is a very sunny city. It is a beautiful place to go to on holiday. Enjoy yourself and remember to take every opportunity to haggle.
