Fascinating historical metropolis

Cairo is a destination rich with history and tradition. From the majestic Nile river, to pyramids and bazaars, the capital of Egypt possesses a wonderful heritage but remains a modern metropolis.

When to go: climate and events

The best time to visit Cairo is from November until March. The weather gets very hot between May and September. Various religious holidays mark the Egyptian year, including Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr, which is the end of Ramadan. Dates vary as they are based on the Islamic calendar. In terms of cultural events, the Cairo International Film Festival is held in November.

Important information about Cairo

A visa is required for British passport holders, who should contact the Egyptian consulate. The passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months after the date of arrival. Vaccines for Hepatitis A, typhus, tetanus, and diphtheria are recommended. Is is important to know that exporting antiques or any protected plants and animals is forbidden. Tap water in Cairo is not suitable to drink and fruit or vegetables should always be either peeled or cooked. The cost of living is much lower than in the UK, with meals in restaurants starting at about 20 EGP and street food costing under 10 EGP. Shopping in markets is also a great idea, as locally grown seasonal produce is cheap. However, the price of textiles, imported food, alcohol and electrical equipment is much higher. Bartering, or haggling, is a common practice, expected in souks.

Arrival, transport, and accommodation

On arrival at the airport, visitors should take bus 356 to Tahrir Square, or bus 381 to Ramses Station. Tickets cost approx. 2 EGP. Taxis are more pricey, with a ride from the airport to the city centre costing around 200 EGP. Prices requested by taxi drivers are often too high and it's important to insist on paying what the meter shows. Hostel rooms are available for around 85 EGP a night, and 3-star hotel rooms cost about 250 EGP per night per person. The public transport network is extensive, with buses, trams, minibuses, underground, trains, and ferries. A single bus or metro ticket is around 2 EGP. As for taxis, they are cheaper than in the UK, as the fixed fare for 3 kilometres is around 5 EGP, and 1.5 EGP per kilometre. Tourists should haggle, as they are usually charged too much.
