Venice has long been known as one of the most romantic cities in the world. It's famous for its museums, cuisine, conspicuously Italian architecture and ancient churches. And, of course, there's no shortage of water.
Best time of year for Venice
While Venice is certainly a city that can be enjoyed all year round, the best time to visit is from April-October. Spring and summer are absolutely divine seasons in which to enjoy the city, as it makes for perfect weather to enjoy a stroll or gondola ride in a canal. Plus, by visiting during these months, visitors can avoid the wet and cold of winter. There can even be flooding during the colder months.
Fun things to do - holidays and festivals
There's something to see and do in Venice all year round. Like many other countries in the world, Carnival occurs in February, during the ten to seventeen days leading up to Ash Wednesday. The "Festa del Redentore," featuring processions and fireworks, takes place on the third Sunday in July, and the Biennale di Venezia art exhibition is held every two years. Also, in August/September there is an 11-day film festival on Lido island.
Local info about transport and accommodation
Upon arrival, visitors have any number of options to reach the city centre. These include a FLY shuttle bus (operated by ATVO) from Venice Airport to the Piazzale Roma. A one-way ticket for this ride costs around 15 euros. Taxis start at around 16 euros for the first 3 km, then go down to about 2 euros per km. Alternately, an ACTV bus 15 costs just about 10 euros or so and takes 25 minutes. A taxi from the airport to the centre costs about 40 euros. Those who want to get on the canals right away can take the water bus marked Alilaguna for roughly 15 euros. The vaporettos (water buses) are very popular, and a 75-minute ticket costs 8 euros or thereabouts. A day pass can be had for around 20 euros. These passes are also redeemable on street buses. It's possible to purchase a 2-day pass for approximately 30 euros, and a 7-day pass for around 60 euros.
Because Venice is such a tourist hotspot, there's no shortage of charming hotels from which to choose. 50 euros a night can secure a room in a 3-star hotel, while budget travellers can find a hostel bunk for about 25 euros.
