Naples: best time to visit and local holidays

The perfect time for a trip to Naples is between April and Jun, and in September. This is when temperatures are below 30°C. July and August are normally very hot.

2. June is an Italian national holiday, the "Festa della Repubblica", which is celebrated with military parades. In June and July there is a 10 day Pizza festival with a ´n elaborate programme of concerts and cabaret. Ferragosto is celebrated on 15 August, with parties, fireworks etc on the beach. The religious festival of St. Gennaro is on 19. September.

Before you go: travel preparations for Naples

Please make sure passports are valid. Travelling as a tourist does not require a visa for periods up to 90 days.

Restaurants will charge an extra cover fee which can be as high as 4 euros, this is called servizio and coperto on the bill. Average meal prices are about 15 euros. Beer will cost about 4 euros, a sof drink around 1.50 euros. The price for a pizza margarita can start at 1.50 euros. Typical regional foods besides pizza and pasta are Babà, which is a yeast cake with rum and Sfogliatelle, a flaky dough filled with ricotta, cinnamon and orange flower extract. Buffalo mozarella is best bought fresh from the market. Typical street food includes panzarotti (a small calzone) or zeppole (deep fried pastry).

Naples: getting around

Transfer from Naples airport to the main station will take 20 minutes with the Alibus, costing around 4 euros. The ticket price includes public transport connections to other parts of Naples. A taxi from the airport into the city centre will set you back about 16 euros.

The price of basic accommodation in a hostel is about 15 to 20 euros. A bed and breakfast costs around 35 euros and a night in a 3 star hotel is priced at ca. 60 euros per person per night on average.

Public transport options include metro, buses, trams, urban train, funicular railways and ferries. The Ticket “integrato campanoia” is valid on all public transport and will cost around EUR 1.60 (single), EUR 4.50 (day pass), and seven days available for around EUR 16.
