Getting to know the Portuguese Algarve

The city of Faro is the gateway fo the southernmost region of Portugal called the Algarve. With its location on the Atlantic Ocean and its large port, Faro is the administrative centre of this region and the point of arrival for tourists arriving by plane.
 

When is best time to visit Faro and the Algarve?

The city of Faro is worth a visit all year round. Beach holidaymakers to the region will be especially spoiled by hot temperatures between about 27 and 35 °C from April to October. However, many beaches are also very busy during the peak season. Winters are mild, with temperatures ranging from 8 to 17 °C.

The Faro International Motorcycle Rally is held annually in mid-July and is particularly popular with motorbike enthusiasts. Folk Faro is a traditional and international folklore festival in August. Music, exhibitions and parties take place during the first half of September.
 

What should you know before your flight to Faro?

To better explore Faro and the region, a hire car is recommended as it will give visitors more freedom. This should be booked well in advance. The cost of living in Faro is somewhat lower than in the UK. Lunch, for example, starts at around €8. Bacalhau, an air-dried codfish, is a typical dish.

What are transfer options from Faro Airport?

The EVA bus line 16 takes you from the airport to the city centre in about 15-20 minutes for just over €2. The same distance will cost about €16 by taxi. Surcharges are added for taxi journeys for luggage, weekends and night shifts between 9pm and 6am. Faro has a well-developed and inexpensive local transport network with buses. This means that towns in the surrounding area can also be reached by bus. The prices depend on the zone. A single trip for one zone costs about 1 €.

Accommodation in Faro is available in backpacker hostels or guesthouses from about 12 € per night. A night in a three-star hotel or a holiday flat costs on average about 40 or 50 €.
