Why should you travel to the Algarve?

The Algarve is the most southerly part of Portugal and boasts beaches and a year-round warm climate, making it the most popular area in Portugal for beach holidays. The area stretches from the east on the Atlantic town of Vila Real bordering with Spain. Sagres is the most westerly town in the Algarve.

The best beaches are found between Faro and Lagos – however, this area can also get extremely busy during the peak holiday season.

More peace and quiet can be found in the western Algarve around Sagres and Tavira, this area has ot been as heavily developed.
 

 


 

How do you prepare for your holiday in the Algarve?

Travel preparations are minimal: passports have to be valid for all trips to EU countries, check that vaccinations are up to date and make sure you have a comprehensive travel insurance policy. If planning a holiday in the summer months and in school holidays book accommodation and hire cars before your trip.

What is the best way to travel around the Algarve?

Traveling around the Algarve is easy and inexpensive by public transport. Options include buses or trains. Buses are perated by one of three companies: Próximo, Eva, Frota Azul Algarve.

From Faro Airport into the city of Faro, take bus 16 (daily service every 30 minutes) for the price of € 2.25. The trip takes around 20 minutes or so depending on traffic. There are also intercity buses in Faro operated by Eva. Destinations include Albufeira for € 4,90, Lagos for € 6,20 or Portimao for € 5,75 for example.

Hire cars or taxis are also a good way of getting around. Hiring cars in advance of arrival for pick up at the airport is a good idea if during the peak season.
