The city's subtropical climate means it is a great place to visit all year round, with mild temperatures of about 15 degrees in January and 23 in August. However, the prime season is from June to November, when you can plunge into the sea at temperatures above 20 degrees. The warmest months are August and September. If you visit in February you can enjoy all the excitement of carnival, while other special occasions are the sugar cane harvest in April to May and Assumption Day on August 15, when there is a procession to "Nossa Senhora do Monte. The wine festival in late August is another draw for visitors.

Both in Funchal and across Madeira, the cost of living is low in comparison to prices in London and other UK cities. A budget meal could cost around 7 EUR. There is free wifi at many locations in the city. Residents of Madeira often have a strong accent when speaking Portuguese. However, many people on the island also speak English.
Local information on transport and where to stay
If you fly into the Airport Santa Catarina, it's possible to travel by Aerobus to Funchal for around 8 EUR return, with a single fare costing about 5 EUR. The public bus costs about 3 EUR one-way, or you could take a taxi. These are metered and there are surcharges for weekends, nights and carrying luggage. A ticket to ride on buses all week will cost about 22 EUR, or alternatively many visitors hire a car. Drivers should be aware that the roads are steep with many bends, and outside Funchal there are long distances between petrol stations. A three-star hotel could cost ca 26 EUR for a night's stay, while the charge for a four-star room is about 62 EUR per night.
