The city of Faro is the gateway fo the southernmost region of Portugal called the Algarve. With its location on the Atlantic Ocean and its large port, Faro is the administrative centre of this region and the point of arrival for tourists arriving by plane.

The Faro International Motorcycle Rally is held annually in mid-July and is particularly popular with motorbike enthusiasts. Folk Faro is a traditional and international folklore festival in August. Music, exhibitions and parties take place during the first half of September.
