Historic Kozhikode

The historic Indian city of Kozhikode (Calicut) has many things of interest to do and see. Visit art galleries, museums, relax on the beach or take a boating trip down the River Kallai. Hike along a river path or go rock climbing by the waterfalls.

Kozhikode -  when to go  

The best time to travel to Kozhikode is from December until March when the weather is pleasantly mild. The city has a humid and tropical climate which is very hot from March till May. The monsoon season is from June until September and October through to November. 

Kozhikode is known for its many holidays and festivals like Diwali, a Hindu festival at the end of October. Shivarathri Utsavam is held in Mahaganapathy Temple in October. For five days in January there's the Malabar Mahotsavam which hosts exciting music, dance and drama.

Kozhikode preparations

Before travelling to Kozhikode, a visa is required. British citizen passport holders can apply for an e-Tourist Visa. Passports need two blank pages and a minimum of 180 days at the time of application. It's recommended to have a number of vaccinations before traveling to Kerala such as Hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid, diphtheria, tetanus and polio. There's a risk of malaria in some parts of India. To stay safe avoid drinking tap water. Thankfully crime levels are low. The cost of living in Kozhikode is very cheap compared to London. Expect to pay around 50 Indian rupees for a basic meal.

Calicut International Airport is 28 km from Kozhikode. The airport bus 747 costs approx INR 3-4 per km from Kondotty bus stand which is 2 km from the airport. When it comes to accommodation, it's a good idea to stay near the beach, other parts of the city can be extremely noisy due to heavy traffic. Budget accommodation is available from around Rs 500 while luxury hotel rooms cost about Rs 4,200. Public transport buses cost in the region of 7 Indian rupees for 3 km while rickshaws will set you back around 15 rupees per km.
