Kerala's Kozhikode

Kozhikode is also known as Calicut and is a city based in the state of Kerala on the Malabar Coast of southern India. It is also the third largest city in the whole of Kerala. It is also regarded to be the second largest agglomeration urban centre in Kerala and is located 380 kilometres to the north of the state capital.

In classical antiquity and during the middle ages the town was called  the "City of Spices", this was because of the central role that it played in the sale of spices. Arab merchants are known to have engaged the town in trade as early as the 7th century. The Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama made entry into the city in 1498 and by doing this he initiated a trade route between Europe and Malabar.
