Air miles

Many airlines offer customer loyalty schemes or reward programs normally referred to as frequent flyer programs.
These frequent flyer programs mean that passengers who often fly with the same airline and who have chosen to take part in the frequent flyer program will be able to earn air miles every time they fly.

Depending on the flight, the traveller will be credited with a certain number of bonus miles, similar to payback points. These air miles may then be redeemed for either rewards or further flights. The way in which the air miles are collected will differ according to the airline or alliance and the type of air mile program. Some airlines will allow passengers to earn bonus points even if they are not actually flying, but can just as easily be bought. Airlines will often cooperate in a frequent flyer programme, and the partner airlines or subsidiary companies may also participate. Other companies such as hotels or rental car companies will sometimes also offer air miles as part of their service. At times, customers taking part in the frequent flyer program will be treated preferentially at check-in and boarding.

A good example of a cooperative air mile program is the British airways Executive Club which permits passengers to earn miles on BA flights, Iberia as well one world partners.
