Hyderabad, a beautiful city with a modern touch

Hyderabad, on the River Musi, is a city full of tradition and history. As well as being a popular tourist destination, it is also an important Indian IT hub, with both Microsoft and Google having their Indian headquarters in Hyderabad.

Year round festivities and when best to travel

October to March are mild and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 29°C, while the Summer months of March to June are hot. The monsoon season runs from July to October. Various Muslim and Hindu festivals are celebrated. Ganesh Chaturthi in August or September, the Diwali festival of lights in October and Bonalu, held in July or August, which worships the goddess Mahakali. Dates for the end of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and the Eid al-Adha Sacrificial Feast vary from year to year.

Useful things to know before you travel

All British passport holders require a visa and British citizens can apply for an e-Tourist Visa. Passports need two blank pages and at least 180 days left till they expire when visas are applied for. Vaccination courses need to start two months before travel and should include Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. Cholera, Diphtheria, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies should also be considered. Telugu is the state language spoken in Hyderabad, but dialects of Hindi and Urdu are also heard. Certain airports in India charge a User Development Fee (UDF) of around Rs 1,000. This is often included in airfares, but if not it must be paid on arrival. Fares to Hyderabad are about Rs 40 per km, with a 25% surcharge between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. When using public taxis and auto-rickshaws negotiate an upfront price. Fares start at around Rs 20 for 2 km, and Rs 10 for each additional kilometre. Buses, often crowded, are operated by APSRTC, with tickets starting at around Rs 20. Cheap hotel rooms cost from around Rs 1000, rising to Rs 2000 for standard accommodation and about Rs 3500 in luxurious hotels.
