Vibrant coastal Chennai
Situated in the Bay of Bengal, Chennai can be found in Eastern India. It is a city ripe with history and culture, and offers visitors a wonderful array of modern, ancient and religious sights. Best time for Chennai - climate and special occasions
With its tropical climate, the city of Chennai has its highest temperatures from late May to June, reaching up to 40°C. The coolest month to visit is January when the temperatures are around 25°C. Monsoon season is from mid-October to mid-December, with occasional cyclones. The 3-day harvest festival in January is called Pongal, and other special occasions held through the year include Karthikai Deepam, which is the Festival of Lights and is celebrated from mid-November to mid-December, the Chennai Music and Dance Festival is held from December to January, and in September is Vinayak Chaturthi, which honours the Hindu god Ganesh.
Local knowledge: language, visa, vaccinations
Before you travel it would be handy to become acquainted with some phrases of the official language, Tamil. However English is also widely spoken. For British visitors, a visa is required to travel to Chennai along with a passport with at least 2 blank pages, which will not expire for 180 from entry date. There is a low risk of Malaria here, but routine vaccinations of hepatitis B, rabies and Japanese encephalitis are recommended for travellers. When in India only drink bottled water and eat only freshly peeled fruit and cooked vegetables.
Local Chennai travel and lodgings
The suburban train station is found 500m from the airport and trains travel to the central city. They are cheap and fairly fast, with a journey costing around 5 rupees. Prepaid taxis are more costly, but faster and can be arranged at the pay booths in the terminal where you will receive a taxi number on a recipe. Within Chennai, a taxi journey will cost a minimum fare of about 100 rupees, and a trip to central Chennai will cost about 300 rupees. Auto rickshaws are metered but often overcharge if you are unaware of the going rate, with prices roughly 25 rupees for 1.8. km. There is also the option of catching a bus to get around town. The company MTC operates cheap buses for a fare of 3 rupees; day bus passes will cost around 50 rupees. The fastest way of getting around is to use the suburban trains - here the cheapest fare will be 5 rupees or so. Chennai is plagued with heavy traffic, so plan extra time for journeys. In the city a single room or boarding house will be around 400 rupees, and a mid-priced hotel about 1000 rupees.
