Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, is a city in Kerala, India. It has serene beaches, historical sites and lovely green countryside so there's lot of any kind of traveller to enjoy when in Kozhikode. The area is a district that trades in many spices and food stuffs. 

Tropical Kozhikode

Kozhikode has a humid and tropical climate most of the time so you may want to avoid it between March and May when it is very hot. Going between December and March will see much cooler weather. Avoid June to September as this is their monsoon season. Kozhikode celebrates all the usual Hindu festivals including Diwali at the end of October. The Shivarathri Utsavam festival is celebrated in October in the Mahaganapathy temple. A five day celebration called Malabar Mahotsavam is in January and hosts music, drama and dance for all to enjoy. 

Visas for Kozhikode

You will need a visa when visiting Kozhikode, British citizens can apply for an e-visa online. You will also need two blank pages in your passport and at least 180 days left on it at the time you apply for the visa. It is recommended that you get vaccinations for hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid, diphtheria, polio and tetanus before you travel. Malaria may also be a risk in some areas of India. 

The crime rate in Kozhikode is low so there's no major need to be concerned about belongings although it's best to keep them safe on any journey. Make sure also to not drink the tap water. The cost of living in Kozhikode is pretty cheap compared to London, a basic meal will cost you around 50 Rs.

Travelling around Kozhikode

Calicut International Airport is 28 km from Kozhikode's central district. The airport bus 747 costs around INR 3-4 per km. This leaves from the Kondotty bus stand around 2 km from the airport itself. It's best to find accommodation near the beach as other parts of Kozhikode can be extremely noisy due to high levels of traffic. Budget accommodation costs from around 500 Rs and luxury from around 4200 Rs. Bus journeys cost around 7 Rs for 3km and a rickshaw around 15 Rs per km.
