Best time to visit the city

Kuala Lumpur is a great destination at any time of year though many people prefer to visit from May to August when it is less rainy.

Celebrations like Chinese New Year at the first full moon between 21st January and 21st February are popular with visitors. Visit in January to see the 15km parade from the city centre to Batu caves to mark Thaipusam Tamil Hindu festival. Hari Merdeka or Independence Day is a national holiday on 31st August and features events, parades and a spectacular firework display. The Islamic festivals of Eid al-Adha (dates vary) and Eid al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan in the 9th month of the Islamic calendar are also widely celebrated. 

Handy tips before travelling to Kuala Lumpur

British citizens don't need visas if visiting for less than three months, although passports must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival.

Vaccinations for  Hepatitis A, Typhus, Tetanus and Diphtheria are recommended and the usual UK vaccinations should be up to date.

Prices in Kuala Lumpur are much lower than the UK. Street food is around 6 MYR and soft drinks about 2 MYR. Western style restaurants and beer (about 12 MYR) are expensive.

Useful information for arrival in the city

The KLIA-Ekspres train takes about 30 minutes from the airport to the city centre and costs around 35 MYR. The shuttle bus service takes approximately 70 minutes and costs roughly 10 MYR. Taxis are about 80 MYR.

There is accommodation to suit every budget and a guesthouse or hostel is about 30 MYR per night while 3-star hotels start from around 70 MYR.

The city has a good public transport system and buses, the metro and suburban trains start from about 2 MYR. Taxis cost about 3 MYR for the first 2km then 3 MYR per km afterwards. A nightly surcharge is added between 00.00 and 06.00.
