Choosing the best time to visit Kathmandu

Monsoon season starts in October and landslides and floods are likely. The best time to visit is during the October to April dry season. March Holi means colourful festivities and water fights or visit March/April for Ghode Jatra festival horse parades. Nepalese New Year is also in April. The Gai Jatra cow festival is in August while Indra Jatra honours the goddess Jatra for 8 days each September. The 2 week Dashain Hindu festival is in October while Jazzmandu international Jazz festival is in November.

Useful 'before you travel' tips

A visa is required and travellers should apply to the Nepalese Embassy in London with a passport that is valid for at least 6 months. Certain vaccines such as Hepatitis A, Typhus, Diptheria and Tetanus are recommended and tourists should speak to their GP at least 8 weeks prior to departure. Export of any protected species is prohibited. Only official tourist buses are permitted to offer overland tours and visitors should refrain from hiking on their own. Visitors should choose bottled or boiled water and avoid drinking from the tap. Power cuts are common in Kathmandu. The city is inexpensive and a restaurant meal might be priced around 200-400NPR. Dal Bhat is a typical meal of rice with vegetables and lentils and momos (Tibetan dumplings) are a favourite local street food. Non-alcoholic drinks are around 45NPR and beer about 320NPR.

Local information for visitors

Hotels sometimes organise transfers from the airport for travellers. Prepaid taxis charge a fixed fare of about 800NPR which is payable in advance. Normal taxis charge about 500NPR and a trip to the city centre takes about 25 minutes. The bus service is irregular and often full and the fare for the 30 minute journey is around 10NPR. Tourists can pay about 365NPR for backpacker hostel accommodation or around 850NPR per person in a guesthouse. 3 star hotel accommodation is approximately 1200NPR per person and a holiday apartment about 2100 NPR. Travel by Microbus (Tempos) or bus - a single tempo journey is about 15NPR and the bus is about 15-20NPR. A rickshaw may be around 60-100 NPR and the fare should be agreed before boarding. Taxi prices are about 200NPR for 3 km plus 60NPR for each additional km but busy roads mean that it's often faster to walk.
