The best time to travel to Kuala Lumpur is from May until August when there is less rain. The city also has many holidays and festivals like the Chinese New Year, first full moon of the year between 21.01 and 21.02. January, Thaipusam -Tamil Hindu festival for Murugan, 15km long parade from the city centre to Batu caves. The 31st August is a National holiday Hari Merkdeka (Independence Day) with parades, events and large firework displays. The Islamic festival (Eid al-Adha) varies in dates while the Festival at the end of Ramadan (Eid al-Fitr) is during the 9th month of the Islamic calendar.

Kuala Lumpur travel preparations

No visas are required by British citizens if staying for less than three months as a tourist. Passports should be valid for six months or more from the date of entry. It's recommended to get vaccinated before travelling to Kuala Lumpur: Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Diphtheria are recommended. Regarding the cost of living, prices are much cheaper than in the UK. Street food is from around 6 MYR, lunch ca. 16 MYR and soft drinks about 2 MYR.  Alcohol and beer are quite expensive, roughly 12 MYR, similar to western style restaurants. For shopping, locally produced textiles are quite cheap.

Local Kuala Lumpur facts 

The airport to Kuala Lumpur KLIA-Ekspres train is around 35 MYR for a journey time or about 30 minutes. The Airport coach shuttle bus price is around 10 MYR, taking approximately 70 minutes to Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station.  A taxi will set you back around 80 MYR. 

Guesthouse or hostel accommodation is in the region of 30 MYR. Expect to pay around 70 MYR to stay in a three-star hotel. 

If you intend using public transport during your visit to Kuala Lumpur, buses, suburban trains and metros cost from 2 MYR. Taxi prices are around 3 MYR for the first 2 km then 2 MYR per km. There's also a surcharge at night between 0-6 o'clock.
