Contrasting with the mountainous unspoiled terrain in the centre of the island, the coastline is interspersed with vast stretches of white sandy beaches and resorts. The island offers an excellent backdrop for a host of adrenaline pumping activities and natural attractions as well as historic, cultural highlights in Las Palmas, the capital. 

 

Which is the best season for Gran Canaria? 

Gran Canaria is suitable for year round visits. The northern part of the island typically has colder weather and more rain than the south, although mid-October to March will see cooler and windier weather across the entire island. 

In February and March, Carnival is celebrated in Maspalomas and other island destinations. On the 30th of May, it is the Dias de las Islas Canarias, which is a national holiday across all of the islands that features parties and concerts. Columbus day is celebrated on 12th of October. 

 

Information to consider before you travel

Most of the tourist resorts such as the popular Playa del Ingles are located on the south coast. Gran Canaria has great surf and a number of surf schools on the island. Inland is good for mountain biking, particularly the central region. The local cuisine includes 'papas arrugadas', a salty potato dish with red or green sauce that is often eaten with various fish. 

Groceries are typically slightly cheaper on the island than in the UK and on average a set lunch menu costs approximately 10 euros. 

 

 

 

 

 

Local tips for a Gran Canaria visit 

The airport has a number of scheduled bus transfers to resort destinations throughout Gran Canaria. Bus 1 will take you to Puerto de Mogan for approximately 7 euros one way, bus 5 transports travellers to Faro de Maspalomas for around 5 euros and bus 11 goes to nearby Aguimes for 2 euros. Visitors travelling to the Teide can use bus number 36 or 90, those travelling to Las Palmas need to use bus 60 and the 91 travels to Playa de Cura. Each single journey costs no more than about 6 euros. 

The local bus companies are Globalsu and Guaguas and short distances are typically less than 2 euros. 

Taxi prices start from 5 euros for a 3 kilometre journey. For journeys exceeding 3 kilometres, each extra km costs approximately 1 euro. 

Three star hotels are available for around 40 euros per person, per night, while cheaper hostel accommodation costs around half the price.
