Breathtaking Architecture & Fantastic Shopping
With a wide range of shopping and nightlife, the city of Dubai makes for an unforgettable vacation experience.
Best time to Travel
Thanks to its fantastic subptropical climate, the city of Dubai offers good weather year round. October and April are the preferred months to visit as the days are generally cooler. The town offers lively nightlife, excellent luxury shopping, and the Burj Khalifa, a 830 metre tall tower. A variety of Islamic holidays are observed in Dubai with the most important being Eid. The holiday marks the conclusion of Ramadan and occurs at the end of the ninth month of the Muslim year.
Before you Travel
Dubai is located in the GST (Gulf Standard Time Zone) and is three hours ahead of London. British citizens are able to apply for a 30 day visa upon their arrival, though visitors should know that there are severe fines for staying longer than your visa. All booster and routine vaccinations should be up to date before you visit. During the Ramadan holiday, strict rules and regulations are in place prohibiting eating, drinking, and smoking in public during the day. The consumption of alcoholic beverages is also strictly regulated throughout the UAE. Food is much cheaper in Dubai with most restaurants nearly 50% cheaper than those in London. Electronics are also much cheaper, though goods imported from Europe are generally more expensive.
Local Information
Public transportation is accessible and reasonably priced throughout the city. At Dubai airport, the red line metro stops every ten minutes in front of terminals one and three.
The green line meanwhile stops at the Airport Free Zone near terminal two. Buses stop at all terminals from 6 am to 10 pm, these include bus numbers: 4, 11, 15, 33, and 44. Both of these metros run Sunday through Thursday from 6 am to 11 pm and Friday's from 1 pm to midnight. One zone prices are 4 AED, 2 zones are 6 AED, and 3 zones are 8.50 AED. For tourists "the red ticket" is both convenient and cheap, allowing for ten journeys over a 90 day period.
Petrol in Dubai is much cheaper than in the UK. And while taxis are noticeably more expensive than the public transportation options, they are still cheaper than cabs in England.
Hostels are much cheaper than hotel rooms in Dubai with shared hostel rooms usually costing around 100 AED while single hotel rooms can go for as high as 800 AED. For those planning to visit during the peak tourist season from September to May it is best to book as early as possible to help save on accommodations.
