Baltimore-Washington International-Thurgood Marshall Airport is by far the largest and most important airport in the small U.S. state of Maryland. Its catchment area covers the entire population of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. Location
First opened in 1950, the airport is about 16 km or 10 miles southwest of downtown Baltimore, in the Linthicum municipality in the district of Anne Arundel County. It is accessible via Interstate Highway 195 which ends in front of the terminal.
Since 1980 the airport has had its own rail station, the BWI Rail Station, where the "Northeast Corridor" route offers a regular service, and Amtrak's Penn Line operates the MARC route. Between BWI Airport Rail Station and the terminal there is a free shuttle service.
There is also a regular bus, the C-60 which operates a regular service from the main terminal to Annapolis. The Light Rail and the bus route 17 of MTA go to various stops in the Baltimore Metro Area, the "Silver Bus" Route of Howard transit operates a service to Columbia, BWI Express Metro bus and the bus route B30 Route of WMATA go to the Greenbelt Metro station in the metropolitan area of Washington and the "BayRunner" shuttle service to Salisbury, Easton, Cambridge, Ocean Pines and Ocean City.
Passengers who need to travel between Baltimore Airport and Washington-Dulles or Washington-Reagan please use the Penn Line or Amtrak service from the nearby BWI Rail station to Washington Union Station. To Washington-Dulles, use the "Red" metro line to Metro station in downtown and then take the Orange Line to Rosslyn station, and from there use the 5A bus route. To Washington Reagan Airport, use the Union Station two stops to Gallery Pl-Chinatown station and then change to the "Blue" or the "Yello" line towards Franconia-Springfield or Huntington.
