Majorca travel tips

Mallorca - capital city and beyond

Palma de Mallorca is the capital city of the largest Balearic Island and it is full of interesting sites to see. The list of places not to miss includes the stunning Gothic Cathedral La Seu, the 13th century Almudaina Palace, the circular Bellver Castle and the port which is lined with million-pound yachts.

What time of year is best to visit Mallorca?

Palma is great to visit all year round and makes an excellent weekend destination in every season. The weather gets very hot in the summer months and it is cold with the possibility of snow in December and January.  May, June, October and November sees warm enough temperature for shorts and t-shirts.

Palma enjoys festivals and large events every year where locals and visitors join in special celebrations. Enjoy 'Nit de Foc' on the 23rd and 24th June when all-night music and fireworks are organised to celebrate midsummer. Easter in Spain begins on the Thursday afternoon with a procession when Palma holds one of the largest parades ever organised. Easter Friday and Sunday are observed with church services and huge picnics. On the 19th and 20th of January there's a Festa de Sant Sebastiá - honouring the patron saint of Palma - which is one of the most spectacular festivals in Mallorca.

Helpful facts

Spanish and Catalan are the official languages of Mallorca and English is commonly spoken as well. The time zone is GMT plus 1 hour. Palma airport is only 9 km out of the centre and a taxi ride there will cost roughly 30 EUR. Hopping on the number 1 bus is cheaper and they run every 15 minutes. Car hire desks are available at the airport too.  Getting around Palma is possible by using the well-developed bus and metro network and as the city is small it is also easy to walk to most areas quite comfortably. To explore the rest of Mallorca, pick up a train or bus from the Plaza de España or rent a car for a relatively inexpensive fee.
