The best time to visit Delhi is October to March. The climate is monsoon influenced and it is cooler and drier in these months. Visit during holidays and festivals and experience Indian culture. The Holi spring festival is in March, the exact date changes according to the Hindu calendar. The 15 August is Independence Day with a big parade in Delhi.

A visa is needed to visit Delhi. Contact the Indian High Commission for more information. Valid passports require two blank pages for the visa and need to be be valid for at least 180 days at the time of application.
A valid polio vaccine certificate is needed if arriving from certain countries. other recommended vaccines include hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and diphtheria. Women should be especially vigilant when travelling alone. Indian prices are much lower than UK prices and quality electronics cost about the same. India Standard Time is UTC/GMT +5:30 hours. As there is no daylight saving time and in summer Delhi is 4:30 hours ahead of the UK during the UK summer months.

To get from Indira Gandhi International Airport to central Delhi take Metro line 2 from 4.40 am until 23.30 hours or a shuttle bus to Connaught Place. A prepaid taxi can be ordered before travel. There is a variety of accommodation. Rated hotels are expensive but guest houses and hostels are available from approximately 500 INR per person per night. Cheap three star hotels cost on average 1400 INR per person per night. There is an inexpensive public transport system that includes buses, metros and rickshaws. Taxi prices are much cheaper than in the UK. The Metro is a good way to reach tourist destinations. A Metro card costs a 50 Rupees deposit and some cash will need to be added. Airport Delhi Indira Gandhi DEL

Delhi Indira Gandhi International airport, short Delhi Airport, is the second largest on the Indian subcontinent after Mumbai by passenger numbers. It is on the outskirts of the city near the town of Nengai Dewat. Several Indian airlines have their main hub at New Delhi or IGI airport including India Air and Jet Airways.

There are 6 terminals at Delhi airport, Terminal 1 is used for domestic flights, the others are used for international routes. There is also a separate Hajj terminal to prevent any delays or disruption to other flights during the Hajj season when large numbers of passengers use the airport.

Location

Delhi airport is approx.12 km or 7 miles southwest of Connaught Place, about 14 km or 9 miles from New Delhi Railway Station (Pahar Ganj). By car from Connaught Place use the highway NH-8 towards Gurgaon and just follow the airport signs. There are several onward travel options, such as car rental, bus, prepaid taxi or Tuk-Tuk.

If arriving in the middle of the night, take a taxi or Tuk-Tuk directly to your hotel. Do not believe stories about the hotel being burned down as these taxi drivers will receive a considerable commission for taking you to specific hotels.
