The tropical climate means temperatures during the day can be between 30-35°C. The summer months are from February until May, March/April are very humid. Mid-May until September is the monsoon season while September-February have cool winds with light, intermittent showers. Peak season is from August until February. Holidays and festivals - The Cochin Carnival Festival is held in December while dates vary for the Islamic festivals of Eid ul-Fitr and Milad-e-sherif.

Before arranging Kochi travel

Before travelling to Kochi you'll need a visa, they are available from the Indian High Commission. It may be possible to get a tourist visa on arrival at Kochi airport, although it's a good idea to check with the Indian Commission. Health preparations are also necessary: vaccinate for the usual diseases covered in the UK, and think about Typhoid, Tetanus and Hepatitis A jabs. You might also want to consider protection against Hepatitis B, Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis and Cholera (especially if you intend to travel during the monsoon season). Don't drink the tap water, and remember to boil, cook and peel vegetables as well as fruit before eating them. The airport is located just 29 km from downtown Kochi. KSRTC operate air-conditioned buses with a journey time of about 1 hour 40 minutes at a cost of approx. 80 RS. Alternatively take a taxi from about 1,200 RS. For accommodation visitors have a choice between Willington Island - upper price range hotels; Fort Cochin area - quiet area with a lot of boutique hotels; and Ernakulam City catering for all budgets. Low cost hostels will be about 800 RS, hotels average about 2,000 rupees.

A ferry ride between Fort Kochi and the mainland will cost you approximately 4 rupees (route from Park Jetty to Fort Kochi). If you want to travel around the city by bus, fares are also in the region of 4 RS upwards. Many visitors choose to get around by auto rickshaw. These start at approximately 10 RS for the first 1.25 km while a taxi will set you back from about 50 RS for the initial 3 km.
