Danube Delight

Budapest is the capital city of Hungary, lying on the river Danube and home to approximately 1.74 million people within its urban limits. It is a city rich in culture and history; prior to the First World War, it was viewed as the second city of the Austro-Hungarian empire. It is also regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world and boasts an impressive array of architecture.

Winter in Budapest is cold, with temperatures around -2 C on average. The best times to visit are between April and October, when the climate is warmer. Summer highs are around 30C so it is important to be prepared when travelling in the peak season. For those travelling in mid-March, the two week Budapest Spring Festival boasts a variety of events and showcases the cities artistic and cultural elements. A large open air festival known as Sziget is also hosted in mid-August. The national holiday falls on the 20th of August and is celebrated with fireworks and festivities by the Danube.


 

Before you travel, food and location

Prices tend to be much cheaper in Hungary than in the UK, with beer costing approximately 300HUF. Food is also cheap, with lunch available for around 1500HUF and dining in high quality restaurants much cheaper than in London. It is best to plan your trip to avoid the tourist traps on Váci Street if you want to experience the true Budapest, while also saving money.


Local information, transport facts and accommodation

From Budapest airport, it is possible to get into the centre of the city using the express train to Nyugati Railway Station. This costs about 620 HUF one way and takes about 25 minutes. Alternatively, the 200E bus route cost about 450 HUF one way and takes around 50 minutes. Taxis to the city are much more expensive, though still cheaper than UK prices at around 6500 HUF. Hostels tend to start from around 2500 HUF per night, with 3 star hotels available from 6000 HUF/pppn. Metro and buses offer single tickets for about 450 HUF, 10 tickets for around 3000 HUF, and a day travel pass for 1650 HUF. Alternatively, rent a bike for around 1800 HUF per half day and explore using the cycle paths in the city centre. The Budapest Card, which includes discounts in some museums, is valid for 24 h and costs around 4500 HUF.
