Hong Kong is vibrant being a major port and densely populated. A former British colony, Hong Kong in South East China is known for its stunning skyline. Shopping opportunities and the food scene are lively. 

 

Best time for a stay in Hong Kong

The climate is subtropical with long hot summers and typhoon rains between June and September. From March until April and from October until December the climate makes a visit more comfortable. The Chinese New Year is a fun time to visit. It is celebrated at the first full moon between the 21st January and  21st February. It is the first full moon in a new year. The Spring Lantern Festival happens in March and the Birthday of Tin Hau, Goddess of the Sea, is celebrated at the end April to the beginning of May. Exact dates will change and depend on the moon calendar. The Dragon Boat Festival is on the 5th day after the 5th full moon, usually in May or June. Establishment Day is celebrated on the 1st July.


 

Pre-travel information 

A visa is not needed for British Citizens who intend to visit for up to 6 months. About 8 weeks before travel visitors should contact a doctor about recommended vaccines. Hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus, rabies and diphtheria may be needed. Generally prices in Hong Kong are lower than in the UK. Lunches cost approximately 100-150 HKD, a beer is priced at approximately 40 HKD and soft drinks around 20 HKD.


 

Local Hong Kong facts

Airport transfers from Hong Kong International Airport to the city centre are straightforward. The Airport Express train goes to Hong Kong Station. It costs about 110 HKD and the journey takes about 25 minutes. A taxi journey to Kowloon or Hong Kong Island costs about 200-350 HKD. Bus number 44 operates 24 hours a day and costs from 10-48 HKD. The range of accommodation is wide. Starred hotels are expensive but there is well priced, good  accommodation in Mong Kok Jordan or Tshim Sha Tsui. Hostels are available and cost from about 250 HKD. Three Star hotels cost approximately 900 HKD per night per person. The public transport system is efficient. There are trams, buses, trains ferries and the metro.
An Octopus card is a rechargeable chip card. Taxis on Hong Kong Island are more expensive than in the suburbs. A taxi in Kowloon costs 70 HKD for the first 3 km, then 15 HKD per km.
