Ahmedabad tourist attractions
The interesting city of Ahmedabad in Western India is a popular tourist destination. It has many fascinating attractions like the Sidi Bashir Mosque, the Calico Museum, Nehru Bridge and Sardar Patel Stadium.
Winter in Ahmedabad
The best time to travel is in the winter when the climate is cooler, around 5-20 degrees C. The weather is very hot from October to April. Monsoon season is generally in mid-June and the summer months are from mid-March until mid-June. Temperatures can be very hot often reaching 45 degrees C in summer.
Ahmedabad has many holidays and festivals. From 12-14 January Makar Sankranti marks the arrival of Spring. Uttarayan, the Kite Flying Festival is on the 14th till 15th of January. During the Monsoon Season from mid-June visitors will encounter special monsoon foods at street stalls. Travel to Ahmedabad in October-November to enjoy Deepavali, the Festival of Lights.
Preparing to travel to Ahmedabad
Visas are needed before you leave for Ahmedabad. British citizen passport holders can apply for an e-Tourist Visa. All passports need two blank pages and a minimum expiry date of six months at the time of visa application.
It's important to make sure your usual vaccinations are up to date and to note that there's a low risk of Malaria in the region. Make sure you are aware that you might need Hepatitis A, typhoid and diphtheria, cholera, tetanus and polio jabs.
The main languages spoken here are Hindi, Gujarat and English, but the local language is Gujarat. Don't worry, however, English is widely spoken and understood by people working in the tourist industry.
When it comes to the cost of living, food is especially cheap. Cheap thali - which is salads, appetisers, breads, snacks, pulses, vegetable curries and sweets - will cost you only around INR 100. Restaurant meals on the other hand, are about Rs 250 and beers in the region of INR 100.
Airport to Ahmedabad
Transport from the airport to the city centre by taxi is around INR 300-400. An auto costs about INR 150-200, you will have to negotiate the fare for both in advance. Alternatively, there is also a bus operated by AMTS.
Regarding accommodation, cheap hostels, INR 700 (East of Sabarmati in the Old Town). Mid priced rooms will be INR 1700 and luxury INR 3400 or so. Navrangpura is a good location for upmarket hotels.
The main mode of transport in Ahmedabad is bus or motorised rickshaw, negotiate the fares or buy a day pass for around INR 45. There's no bus service between 11 pm - 6 am.
The Central Square, called Manek Chowk, is ideal for markets and food stalls.
