The best time to travel to Geneva is during the height of summer, which is July and August. The most convenient mode of transport for getting to the mountains is by hire car. Geneva has a distinct cuisine, and there are many local specialities such as the Longeole sausage. Transport and accommodation in Geneva
Free public transport is available from the Aéroport International de Genève to the city centre. A ticket can be obtained from the machines by the luggage reclaim area, and this must be used within 80 minutes. It takes around 7 minutes to travel from the airport to the main station via train, and about 30 minutes by Bus Line 5 and Trolley Bus Line 10. Taxis from the airport to the city centre cost from around 35 CHF. Some hotels provide free shuttle buses. Expect to pay from 25 CHF per person, per night for cheap hostel accommodation. A room in a 3-star hotel costs from about 135 CHF per night. For getting about the city, there are trams, buses and trolley buses. Guests at hotel, youth hostels and campsites are provided with a transport card that entitles the holder to free travel. Otherwise, single fares cost about 3 CHF and a day pass from 8 CHF. Taxis are generally not necessary and also tend to be quite expensive. During the summer months, free bike hire is also available.
