September till March in Dhaka
Dhaka has a humid, tropical climate. The best time to travel here is between the months of September and March. It is best to avoid May till September as this is the monsoon season, while from April to June there can be tropical storms.
Dhaka is a good city to enjoy for one of the many holidays and festivals. There's the Dhaka Art Summit in February, the Chobi Mela, a photography festival, at the end of January and in February, the Dhaka World Music Festival. Eid el Fitr and Adha, the Islamic religious festivals, are also celebrated in the city and as for the Hindu Festivals, dates will vary according to the lunar calendar.
Visas and other Dhaka travel preparations
Visas are needed by British passport holders, who can apply at the Bangladesh High Commission for a one month visa.
Before travelling it's important to have routine vaccinations like Diphtheria, Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, as well as maybe Cholera, Hepatitis B, Rabies and Encephalitis. The malaria risk is low.
The main language spoken is Bengali. However, Urdu and Hindu are also understood and spoken by some in many parts. Some people also speak English.
The cost of most things in Dhaka is very low. Food in restaurants costs from around Tk 60. Head to the districts Gulshan/Banani/Baridhara for more luxurious restaurants.
Dhaka - getting there and around
Air travellers will arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, approx 20 km north of Dhaka. It is possible to take a public airport bus from the airport road (5 minutes from airport) around BDT 10 to Gulistan bus station. The service stops at roughly 8 pm and buses are generally overcrowded so avoid if taking bulky luggage. There are also taxis at are about BDT 400 with a journey time of around 30 minutes (if there's no meter, agree on a fare before setting off).
Accommodation in Dhaka will cost from Tk 60 or so for a bed in a cheap hotel, mid-priced accommodation from roughly Tk 4,100.
To get around, cycle rickshaws are ideal for short distances. These should cost between Tk 30-50 for 15 minutes, although it is best to negotiate fares before leaving. Auto rickshaws (CNGs) are normally metered and will travel 8 km for around Tk 150-250 (Tk 25 for the first 2 km then Tk 7 per km). Taxi with meters fares are about Tk 25. However, don't forget to haggle. Yellow taxis have air conditioning. Buses run along the main roads; these are crowded and passengers should buy a ticket in advance. They are slower than CNGs as roads are very congested.
