Singapore travel tips
Relax Amongst Skyscrapers in Singapore
Enjoy a trip to Singapore, a once forgotten city used as a mere stop over travellers is now a sought after modern holiday spot buzzing with life. This densely populated small island country boasts wonderful night life, superior shopping experiences and a wealth of wonderful cuisine. Singapore is a haven of activity that you won't want to miss, it also makes for a great base for travelling to neighbouring areas.
Know when to go!
Singapore's climate isn't very changeable so you won't have to avoid any rainy season or overly hot months, temperatures range from 23C to 34C. While it is an all year round destination you may want to consider celebrations either if you'd like to join in or to avoid if you're looking for a more peaceful stay. The Chinese New Year is obviously a very popular time occurring towards the end of January. The Buddhist festival of Vesakh is in May and there's a national holiday in August.
Take note and be prepared
Passports should have 6 months left on them, there's no need for a visa if you're staying for less than 30 days. Vaccinations for hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended so see your GP or local medical centre well before you go. Singapore prides itself on being extremely clean and modest, when on public transport you are forbidden to eat or drink, doing so will see you getting very high fines. Spitting in the street or dropping litter can also land you in big trouble and smoking is only allowed in clearly marked, designated areas. If visiting a mosque you must make sure that your legs and arms are covered and that you remove shoes before you enter. The cost of living is very low with a meal costing around 6 SGD from a market.
Some handy local information
Getting from the airport is simple, you can either take the metro, which gets you to the centre of Singapore in 30 minutes for around 2 SGD. Or you can get the bus at a cost of ca. 6 SGD which takes around an hour. You can get a taxi but this can cost approximately 30 SGD during the day and 45 SGD at night. Some good areas to stay are Little India, Chinatown, Geylang or the Arab Street area, hostels cost from around 30 SGD. Consider getting an EZ - Link pass for reduced fares on the metro and bus. Taxis can be pricey and cost more at night and rush hour.
