The fleet consists of 4 Boeing 777-300 and 33 Airbus aircraft. Gulf Air owns 2 Airbus A319, 10 Airbus A320, 2 AirbusA321, 10 Airbus A330 and 9 Airbus A340.
Gulf Air was founded as a private airline by the name of Gulf Aviation. In the years that followed, the British Overseas Airways Corporation increasingly invested in Gulf Air, until it owned the most shares. In the same year, London was then taken up in the network of flights, and the four emirates Bahrain, Katar, Abu Dhabi and Oman later took over the shares. The airline became the national airline of the four states in January 1974 and was also given its current name.
In the years that followed, Gulf Air expanded its fleet. In 1983, there was a tragic accident on the flight from Karachi to Abu Dhabi, an explosion tore the Boeing 737
apart. None of the passengers or crew survived the terrorist attack.
The first Boeing 767 was bought in 1988 and used to operate flights to Frankfurt. A few years on, Gulf Air was the first Arab airline to operate flights to Australia.
After the turn of the century, the airline underwent reconstruction, as it was experiencing financial difficulties and Qatar and Abu Dhabi pulled out their share.
Abu Dhabi also began to compete with Gulf Air with its new airline Etihad.
Gulf Air has the most dense network of flights in the Middle East, From Bahrain, flights are operated to Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Bangkok, New Delhi, Madras and Islamabad. The network of flights includes Europe, the Orient and Asia.
